Starships! Were meant to fly!

I was going to do a linkspam, but, you know, the sun is shining, I’m packing, my life is falling apart slightly less today than it was yesterday, and all the links can wait.

But you all NEED to SEE THIS.

It made me remember why I fell in love with science fiction in the first place. And oh, did I ever fall in love with science fiction. SPAAAACE! BOOM! Ships and stars and weirder wonders, and the great hope that we might still be human, and humane, and ourselves, against all that endless dark.

Oh bright rain, brave clouds, oh stars,
oh stars.

Two thousand four hundred fires
and uncharted, unstudied,
the hours, the hours, the hours.

    Oh god, I LOVE this.

I think that’s why, say, Firefly is so loved. It’s one of the shows that really did get the idea of being out there in the cold, dark, unimaginable spaces and creating real family and warmth within that.

    LOVE LOVELOVE.

    p.s. Admirable? D’awwwwh, thank you!

  2. Yes. I will always love Farscape best (because it is weirdest! And also the characters really change and suffer and grow…) but Firefly touched one of those deep wells of human feeling as well, the plucky band of (gorram) (accidental, semi-doomed, ordinary) heroes up against the inimical universe – and giving the finger to authority on the way.

I’m pretty sad we haven’t had a grand rollicking SF TV show in a few years. Doctor Who does what it does very well, but what it does doesn’t work for me. Everything else SFnal (as opposed to fantastical) seems to be all dystopic pre/post/peri-apocalyptic. Which is also fine – but where’s the JOY and WONDER and GIANT FLYING SPACESHIPS in that, huh? I ask you! *g*

(I admire your blog. Ergo, admirable!)

  3. Yes, I’m going to list JUST HOW PERFECT and in what ways as soon as I finish watching the replay (for the 4,447th time)… gimme a sec. … whoops I hit replay again. I’ma need a minute more.

  4. Takeoff sequences! Spinning sequences! Rolling around on the floor sequences! Every spaceship I have ever loved. The Yes! The Ohshiiiit… The LUDICROUS SPEED. Starbuck. Mal. The beauty of what we imagine is possible. The speed. The stars. Fuck yeah starships.

    … hits replay.

  5. Like it’s your last chance! If you want more! Then here I am!

LET’S DO THIS. ONE MORE TIME.

    – It’s quite honestly made me cry with joy.

(“Oh bright rain, brave clouds, oh stars,
    oh stars.

    and uncharted, unstudied,

    )

    Oh, stars.

Let’s do this. One last time.
